 Outstanding Graduate Students in Animal and Food Science

These students were selected by the department’s Graduate Activities Committee based on their CV, abstract of their research, and letter of nomination from their Major Advisor. Each winner will receive a $500 cash award.

  • Outstanding M.S. Student – Sarah Elefson (Major Advisor is Dr. Merlin Lindemann)
  • Outstanding Ph.D. Student – Amanda McLean (Major Advisor is Dr. David Harmon)


AFSGSA Poster Symposium Award Winners

  • 1st place in M.S. Division – Tyler Chevalier (Major Advisor is Dr. Merlin Lindemann) for poster entitled “Effects of an additional iron injection administered to piglets before weaning”
  • 2nd place in M.S. Division – Aeneas Koosis (Major Advisor is Dr. Youling Xiong for poster entitled “Taking the eggs out of the basket; replacement of eggs with ultrasound treated pea protein”
  • 1st place in Ph.D. Division – Morgan Pyles (Major Advisor is Dr. Laurie Lawrence) for poster entitled “Effect of a fat supplemented concentrate on fecal cellulolytic bacteria in horses”
  • 2nd place in Ph.D. Division – Badrinath Jagannathan (Major Advisor is Dr. Paul Vijayakumar) for poster entitled “Use of pathogen-specific compounds with chemically related structures on gelling properties and oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein-emulsion composites”

NOTE: Badrinath Jagannathan also received the People’s Choice Award (as voted by attendees)

  • 1st place in Proposal Division – Yifei Wang (Major Advisor is Dr. Suman Surendranath) for poster entitled “Characterizing myoglobin phosphorylation and its relationship with beef color stability”
