KY Bull Assessment Tool
This website was designed to assist beef farmers in Kentucky to identify bulls that qualify for the CAIP Beef Genetic Improvement Program based on their Expected Progeny Differences. This is just one of the requirements to qualify for cost-share through CAIP, for full requirements please visit https://www.kyagr.com/agpolicy/documents/2023-Program-Guidelines-Applications/ADF_APP_animal-large.pdf. This website can assist commercial or seedstock producers that are searching for a bull to purchase (Calculator for Buyers) or seedstock producers that are determining which categories the bulls they are selling qualify for (Calculator for Sellers). These calculators are specific for bulls purchased using 2021 CAIP funds. If your county is using prior year funding then the Genomic requirement is not applicable and more categories may be available. If you are unsure, talk to your county ANR agent or CAIP administrator. For farmers that are seeking a bull for purchase it is important that you determine which category of bull best fits your needs first. To assist in this process please refer to the document Beef Sire Selection for Cattle Genetic Improvement Program (https://www.kyagr.com/agpolicy/documents/2023-Program-Guidelines-Applications/ADF_APP_caip-epd-standards.pdf).

This website was developed by the University of Kentucky to assist farmers to determine if their bulls qualify for the CAIP Beef Genetic Improvement Program. Qualification by a bull does not imply eligibility for cost-share dollars, producers must complete their county application process to determine eligibility for the CAIP Beef Genetic Improvement Program. The University of Kentucky is providing this assessment tool to assist producers, and final acceptance in the program is determined exclusively by the Kentucky Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy. Website questions should be addressed to Velvet Barnett at Velvet.Barnett@uky.edu. Questions regarding bull EPD guidelines should be addressed to Darrh Bullock dbullock@uky.edu. All other questions regarding eligibility for the CAIP Beef Genetic Improvement Program should be address to the Kentucky’s Office of Agricultural Policy koap@ky.gov.
