Pre-Veterinary Mentoring

Pre-Veterinary Mentoring

Are you interested in attending veterinary school after college? Do you have a passion for animals, science and medicine? If so, the University of Kentucky may be a great fit for you.

Pre-veterinary medicine at UK is not a degree program, which allows students to follow their specific passions. Students frequently major in Animal SciencesEquine Science and ManagementAg and Medical Biotechnology, Biology and Chemistry, but UK pre-vet students have also obtained degrees in Fine Arts, Education, Communication and many others programs. No matter what major or degree you prefer at UK, pre-vet mentors are available to assist you through the veterinary school preparation process.

Through the Pre-Vet Mentoring Program, UK students are provided up-to-date information and opportunities. Pre-vet mentors work closely with each student to ensure they are given every opportunity for success.

Prospective Students

The pre-veterinary medicine mentoring program prepares students to meet requirements for veterinary school applications. Although Kentucky does not have a veterinary school, there are contract seats available for legal Kentucky residents at the veterinary programs at Auburn (38 seats). These seats are not reserved for any specific Kentucky college or university but are for any qualified legal Kentucky resident. Pre-vet students can apply to any U.S. veterinary program if they have satisfied all prerequisites.

So, why should you come to UK?

  • UK has the largest pre-veterinary program in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with Pre-Vet Mentors who will equip you with the tools and guidance to support a strong veterinary school application. These mentors are on hand to answer questions and meet regularly with students to facilitate prerequisite course completion.
  • Central Kentucky offers students opportunities to work with world-class equine veterinarians. Volunteer and paid positions exist working with equine, small, and large animal veterinarians (and more!) and are announced on the UK pre-veterinary Canvas page.
  • Students have a direct line of pre-vet information via the Pre-Vet Canvas page. Updates on vet school requirements, course equivalencies, job and volunteer opportunities, guest speakers and more are regularly shared with UK Pre-Vet students.
  • The UK Pre-Vet Mentoring Program holds mock Interviews and practice sessions to help prepare applicants for different types of veterinary school interview.

Pre-Vet Club

The UK Pre-Vet Club is open to all students interested in veterinary medicine. The purpose of the club is to foster leadership development, provide an atmosphere of social enrichment, and offer opportunities for pre-veterinary students to explore various aspects of the veterinary field through a supportive, peer-based community.

Meetings throughout the year allow members to listen and exchange ideas and information about their classes and work experiences. These monthly meetings center around a guest speaker, which is often a local veterinarian but may also feature practice managers, interns, current veterinary students, or Ph.D.’s. These speakers from different aspects of the industry expose pre-veterinary club members to the many options available for their professional future. Other activities may include visits to veterinary schools and local animal care facilities, as well as participation in national pre-veterinary student symposia.

The club consists of around 75-100 members and meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Pre-Vet Advisors strongly recommend participating in UK's Pre-Vet Club.
